‘Primitives’ Collection

The ‘Primitives’ Collection is a body of work that will continue into the future. It incorporates ancient textile techinques and natural material in a way that reflects our global cultural heritage. This collection invokes a connectedness with the natural world and the materials they had avaialble to them. When I incorporate a found object into these pieces, they are often ones I have found on a personal journey to a place that stirs the senses and evokes great emotion. I hope you enjoy it.

Ancient Threads I, 2024, 11" X 14", multi-media textile using stick weaving with copper threads and shashiko-style stitching. The copper threads are recycled wire from a discarded electrical cord.
Ancient Threads II, 2024, 11" X 14", multi-media textile with stick weaving and slo stitching on hand-dyed cloth
Ancient Threads III, 2024, 13.5" X 17.5", multi-media textile with stick weaving using natural materials and traditional tapestry weaving
Ancient Voices, 2024, 5" X 7", multi-media textile weaving using repurposed sari silk, handspun yarn, and basket weaving material on a hand-dyed background
Beachfront Property, 2024, 9" X 12", multi media textile incorporating a found object and loose leno weave on a hand-dyed background. The perfume bottle used in this piece was found in an old dump behind a house where I used to live. It is Avon's Night in Paris, which was produced from 1928 and discontinued in the 1960s.
Ancient Ways, 2024, 13.5" X 17.5", multi-media textile with handwoven paper, basket weaving material, and a crocheted and wood-burned piece of driftwood. The driftwood was found on one of many trips to Lake Erie this year. The background is hand-dyed and reflects primitive figures that you might find in cave paintings.
Firefly, 2024, 20" X 16", multi-media textile using grasses, driftwood, crochet, fiber sraps, a metal firefly, and Shashiko-style stitching. This piece reminds me of a trip to Lake Erie this summer where I found the driftwood.
